By 1400, the authorities of the prosperous city of Bremen decided to build a new the town hall. Gothic building in two floors with large rooms — Lower and Upper — was constructed in 1405-1410, In the Northern part of the building there were separate rooms. The sprocket of the defensive tower and the gallery has survived.

In 1600, the Bremen Senate decided that the modest appearance of the Gothic town hall does not meet its Executive order and adopted the decision on restructuring, which was carried out in the style of the “Weser Renaissance” in 1608-1612, according to a project of the Bremen architect Luder von Bentheim. The Windows in the building were increased in size, and the middle part of the building was demolished. During reconstruction, the building had a large glass Bay window, topped with a Flemish gable. The facade of the town hall in the style of the Weser Renaissance are decorated with numerous reliefs and statues of people, angels and fantastic animals. Decorative elements of the façade were executed by the projects of the Dutch masters of the Renaissance: Hans Vredeman de Vries, Hendrik Goltzius and Jacob Floris.Over time the building had various outbuildings.
